February, 2020: There was a large crack in the wall of my new Montreal apartment. I could see it when I lay in bed. The crack shaped my adoration for the place—I tend to love bruises in old buildings—but also cradled the sleepless anxieties of bad landlords, squirrel nests, and heating bills. My partner wanted it covered up. I wanted to see it golden-gilded, so I painted it.
My absentee landlord recently destroyed it. At least he's fixing things, yes?
